Hey, this is really impressive, but I think the question for most developers/designers is how practical it will be to use on real projects.
Where I think a module like this could really gain some momentum is to create templates for other end users content, separate from the main site. The specific example that comes to mind is a newsletter. It would be great if a user could go in and pick from a bunch of templates/layouts and tweak the styles, add a banner image and save the whole thing as a template. Then when creating newsletters they pick their template and insert their content.
I wonder if that is something you have thought of or if it might be possible to extend the module to support theming things other then the main theme.
Looking forward to having a play when its released.

Our goal with Live Themer is to make it appealing to both newbies, who want to point and click to theme their site, but also to developers with a more programatic approach.
Whilst it's not obvious in this screen cast, Live Themer has the ability to theme anything that runs through a theme hook, so your newsletter example should definitely be possible.
The scope of what should be possible with Live Themer is quite broad, and we just haven't had the time to implement everything that is in our heads yet, let alone show it in a 3 minute screen cast.
Thanks for your interest!!

What's the general timeline for the current state of the project to be committed to Drupal.org? Is it days, a week, weeks, or more? I'm dying to get a hands on.
marmalade said:
We are right in the middle of porting it to Drupal 7 which is going great! Live Themer loves D7! Hopefully it won't take more than a few more weeks to finish the port and give it a final spit and polish before we release a beta to public scrutiny :)
codycraven said:
Are you still looking like a release will be coming in the next couple weeks or have things been delayed? Also if you were interested in using Drupal.org as your repo you may get a few patches thrown your way that could help in the effort *hint* *hint*.

Looks great. Questions: Will it play nice with all the usual suspects? Nodewords/Meta-Tags, Ubercart, Views, etc? Any kind of commercial licensing / purchase requirements?
Can't wait to try this. Thanks!

Consider using a JS color-picker for folks who don't know hex colors.
Not everybody likes blocks. Will this have support for panels style plugins?
marmalade said:
@Art Vandeley @c4rl Thanks for your comments. Live Themer has the ability to theme anything that uses Drupal's hook_theme so yes! it will play nicely with other modules so long as they have proper theme implementations.
The module will be completely free and released on drupal.org as soon as we can get it running nicely on D7.
@c4rl For sure, we definitely intend on making the form fields more accessible, which includes adding a colour picker and a truckload of other nice widgets. Focussing on the back end for now.

just want to say that this looks amazing. great job guys.

It looks great. Just wondering if you plan to release a D6 version as well in the near future?
marmalade said:
Hey — we have chosen not to release a D6 version; we figure most people will use D7 from this point on, and a D6 branch would also be a significant support overhead for us over the next couple of years. D7 changed in numerous fundamental (and fantastic) ways which Live Themer now utilises.
Sorry if this isn't the best of news for you!

how i can test beta
i can,t download it
codycraven said:
They don't have a release yet or anything committed in to the Git repository tied to their project page on Drupal.org.
AndyP said:
Why is it the case that they don't have a release yet when the demo looks so functional?
tester said:
If possible, can we get some sort of frame of reference for when we will see a release (beta or final)? I just would like to know whether I should hold off developing my sites theme to use this tool. Either way, thanks for this great-looking tool!
codycraven said:
Starting to look like vaporware guys.
tester said:
Pity, this looks like it could have been a great free alternative to Astisteer. Any other suggestions, people?
marmalade said:
I can assure you all that Live Themer is NOT vapourware. As we've mentioned before in previous comments — we are in the middle of porting it to Drupal 7 — which, I'm sure you can appreciate, is no small feat. Things are going well, though, and we are getting close to releasing it to the private beta testers. For more up to date information you can follow @livethemer on twitter.

Perhaps you should release a live test here on your website?

This looks awesome. I'm new to drupal and constantly amazed how rich the user community is. Thanks for this contribution, I can't wait to try it.
Kalle said:
How about some information now when it's up for testing for some? Does it work, will it kick ass, and will it be free?
Jeremy said:
This looks awesome! Cannot wait. Could totally change the dynamic of Drupal themeing. Congratulations! Looking forward to using it.

This is very interesting. It would be very interesting if you add this module to firebug as a addon to firefox. I know a lot of themers who know css and like to test all the new functionality, like to get into the html and css and see what is going on. for various reasons, performace, general curiousity, best practices etc ...
I am not to sure I would actually use it. I will most certianly download the module , but .. I think it has a hell of a lot of potential. Sweaver it very similar and it will be very interesting to see which editor coming out on top.
Nice work.
marmalade said:
Hey subzero,
Thanks for you comment!
On the Live Themer module page we explain that Live Themer is fundamentally different to Sweaver in that it does a lot more than just dynamically adjust css. Live Themer can dynamically swap out the markup used to build the various elements of the page giving you a much broader range of theming scope. The other exciting thing that Live Themer can do is to dynamically add javascript functionality to your page. Think how cool it would be to be able to click on a block with a list of images inside it and instantly turn it into a slideshow. Say you have a block with the login form on it, you click on the block, apply a variation and then from that point forth the login block becomes a tab at the top of the browser window and when you click the tab the login block slides down and can be used like normal. We think things like this make Live Themer much more powerful than Sweaver et al.
As for a Firebug plugin, well, we can only dream :)

Hello from Germany,
this is great ... if you really make this module completely free , I think it will be a geat step to the whole drupal system itself. Because a lot of people like me :) - who have a good basic knowlegde about using cms like wordpress or drupal but have not so deep programming skills - will love it to make their own themes in drupal 7.
I hope it will come soon and if You are interested, I could help to translate it in German :) !

If this module is being ported, that means there is a Drupal 6 version that exists? Could that be released while we all wait for Drupal 7?
marmalade said:
Sorry, the Drupal 6 version was full of bugs and unfit for human consumption. The current state of the D7 release is much further along that the D6 one ever was. We're hoping to get something out very soon!
